Andrzej Steinbach
Andrzej Steinbach (b. 1983, Czarnków, Poland) lives and works in Berlin. A graduate of the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig, his practice spans photography, video, sculpture and installation. His work examines relationships between bodies, objects and images, and the social codes that shape their perception. Through precise staging, repetition and shifts in context, he questions processes of identification and classification, allowing figures and objects to remain open to multiple readings.
Upcoming presentations include Hier at Huis Marseille, Amsterdam (2026–2027), and Révéler. Collection de photographie du Centre Pompidou at the Grand Palais, Paris, presented as part of Paris Photo (2026). Recent exhibitions include Hausfrieden, Übungsgelände at Galerie Conradi, Hamburg (2026); Hier at Kunsthalle Erfurt (2025–2026) and Museum für Photographie Braunschweig (2025); a two-person exhibition with Clément Cogitore at Kunstraum Innsbruck (2025–2026); Simultaneous Localization and Mapping at KIN, Brussels (2024); and Unkenntliches Metall at the Leopold-Hoesch-Museum, Düren (2024). Earlier presentations include Being: New Photography at the Museum of Modern Art, New York (2018).
In 2026, Steinbach received the Contemporary German Photography scholarship from the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach Foundation, awarded in collaboration with Museum Folkwang, for his project Gesichtsmaschine.
His latest publication, Extensions (Spector Books, 2026), brings together his recent photographic series with earlier works, with texts by Barbara Hofmann-Johnson and Susanne Knorr.
His work is held in institutional collections including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Centre Pompidou, Paris; Fotomuseum Winterthur; Hamburger Kunsthalle; Museum Folkwang, Essen; and Sprengel Museum, Hanover.
