Richie Culver (b.1979, Hull, UK) is a British multidisciplinary artist focusing mainly on Painting, Photography and Sound work.

Born in Hull in the North of England, his practice is deeply biographical, engaging with themes of contemporary masculinity, class, and the pervasive impact of digital technology on human relationships and perception. Despite his lack of formal qualifications after leaving school to work in a caravan factory, Culver later pursued advanced studies in painting, earning an MA from the Royal College of Art in 2023.

A large proportion of Culver’s artisitic identity lies in his antagonistic relationship with technology, the ultimate impermanence of social media and the effects upon human interaction and linguistics, alongside personal and cultural memory. In this regard, much of the material for Culver’s works are formed from images collected on his phone including mundane mobile photography, google translate and notes apps screenshots containing excerpts of conversations, phrases and information. These images, often containing snippets of text or conversations, are enlarged and presented on canvas, serving as fragmented visual records of his thoughts and experiences.

Exploring the fleeting nature of social media and its impact on communication and memory, his art delves into the superficial connections fostered by digital advancements. He portrays these connections as alienating, highlighting how they detract from genuine understanding and human interaction rather than enriching them.

Moreover, Culver addresses issues of masculinity in his work, using motifs related to fatherhood, love, and rejection to expose the emotional vulnerability of men. While his approach includes elements of humor, it primarily conveys a stark honesty, urging a reconsideration of contemporary masculine identities. This interplay of humor and sincerity in tackling such personal and societal issues is a distinctive aspect of Culver's artistic voice.

As a Musician he has worked alongside Blackhaine, Moor Mother and Billy Woods. Culver also performs under the alias Quiet Husband and will be presenting a body of work this year at Atonal, Berlin.
