Presentation
James Leyland Kirby (born May 9, 1974, in Stockport, England) is a British experimental and ambient musician best known for his project The Caretaker. Drawing inspiration from the haunted ballroom scene in The Shining, The Caretaker explores themes of memory, nostalgia, and mental decay through manipulated 1920s–1940s ballroom recordings. His work gained international acclaim with An Empty Bliss Beyond This World (2011) and culminated in the six-album series Everywhere at the End of Time (2016–2019), a harrowing sonic portrayal of dementia’s progression. Kirby has also released music under aliases such as V/Vm and The Stranger, and currently resides in Kraków, Poland.
