Sofiia Stepanova (b. 1994, Kyiv) is a Ukrainian artist based in Berlin. She studied painting at the
Kyiv Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture, where her background in iconography, religious art, and symbolism continues to inform the compositional and psychological structure of her work.
Her practice explores instability within systems of identity. Through shifting figures, fragmented bodies, and loosely staged environments, she creates images where vulnerability and control coexist. Figures move between physical presence and dissolution, often appearing displaced, obscured, or held as traces of memory.
Stepanova is interested in gestures and emotional patterns that repeat unconsciously, often without clear origin. Rather than presenting fixed individuals, her figures emerge through memory, shifting roles, and their relationships to one another. This sense of recurrence extends into the
natural world, where cycles of growth, decay, and return echo patterns of human experience. Her work resists fixed identities and linear narratives.
