Helen Flockhart

Helen Flockhart (b. 1963, Hamilton, Scotland) is a Scottish painter whose meticulously crafted works occupy a singular place within contemporary figurative painting. Blending influences from medieval iconography, folk art, mythology, and surrealism, she creates dreamlike pictorial worlds where symbolic narratives unfold through lush landscapes, intricate ornamentation, and luminous detail.

A graduate of the Glasgow School of Art, where she studied from 1980 to 1985, Flockhart continued her education at the State Higher School of Fine Arts in Poznań, Poland. Her paintings transform historical figures, botanical forms, animals, and archetypal female protagonists into richly layered visual allegories that blur the boundaries between reality and imagination. Described as "a time travelling botanist crossed with a medieval miniaturist," her practice unfolds through slow, contemplative images that invite prolonged looking and reflection.

Over a career spanning four decades, Flockhart has exhibited extensively throughout the United Kingdom and internationally. Notable solo exhibitions include Linger Awhile (2018), In the Morning It Is Green (2017), Nocturne (2015), Dryland, Wetlands (2003), and The Verdant Maze (2001). She was awarded the Noble Grossart Painting Prize in 2000, and her work is held in major public collections including the Scottish Arts Council and The Fleming Collection.
