Chunkook Lee

Biography

Chunkook Lee (b. 1995, South Korea) is a Seoul-based artist whose practice moves between sculpture, painting, and digital image culture. Drawing from mythology, fantasy, religious iconography, medieval ornament, video games, and the natural world, his work explores the unstable boundary between image and object, organic growth and technological construction.

Working with materials including aluminium, resin, glass, polymer clay, and 3D-printed elements, Lee combines digital modelling with traditional processes of casting and hand fabrication. His sculptures often appear to grow beyond their own limits, developing swollen, highly detailed surfaces in which ornament becomes something closer to an organism than decoration. Repetition, accumulation, and excess allow forms to proliferate, creating a visual language that oscillates between the sacred and artificial, the bodily and botanical, and the virtual and material.

Lee is particularly interested in how sculpture operates within a post-digital environment in which objects are increasingly encountered as images before they are experienced physically. By translating forms associated with gaming, simulation, and online visual culture into tactile objects, his work emphasizes the gap between the weightlessness of the digital image and the scale, texture, gravity, and material presence of sculpture.

Lee received a BA in Sculpture from Chung-Ang University and an MFA in Sculpture from Hongik University. Recent solo exhibitions include FARM at Bio Gallery, Seoul (2025), and HIT AND RUN at Artspace Hyeong, Seoul (2022). His work has been presented internationally. He lives and works in Seoul.
