Martin Voigt

Martin Voigt (b. 1990, Leipzig, Germany) is a painter who lives and works in Leipzig. His atmospheric still lifes, landscapes, and depictions of enigmatic figures draw on a visual language reminiscent of Renaissance, Baroque, Romantic, and Symbolist painting, while remaining firmly rooted in the objects, environments, and traces of contemporary everyday life.

Working with dramatic contrasts of light and shadow, Voigt transforms seemingly ordinary subjects into psychologically charged images. Skulls, plants, abandoned interiors, worn surfaces, discarded objects, and fragments of human presence appear with equal intensity, often suggesting something that has just disappeared or been left behind. Rather than directly revisiting historical genres, Voigt uses their atmosphere and compositional precision to explore transience, memory, absence, and the tension between decay and permanence. His paintings invite close attention to overlooked details, finding melancholy and beauty in the marks that time and use leave upon things.

Before turning to painting, Voigt trained and worked as a stonemason, sculptor, and restorer in the preservation of historic monuments, an experience that informs his sensitivity to material, surface, and the passage of time. From 2013 to 2018, he studied Painting and Graphics with Prof. Annette Schröter at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig, graduating with a diploma, and studied with Odd Nerdrum in 2017–18. In 2018, his work was presented at Academy Positions during Positions Berlin Art Fair, where he received the Berlin Hyp Award.
