Zixiang Wei
Wei Zixiang (b. 1991, Shenyang, China) is a Chinese artist who lives and works in Paris. He studied painting at the Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts before completing a Master’s degree at the Nantes Saint-Nazaire School of Fine Arts.
Working without sketches, photographs, predetermined narratives or external cultural references, Wei develops his paintings through a continuous process of spreading, differentiating and erasing. Moving between control and chance, his images occupy an ambiguous space between abstraction and figuration, with forms gradually emerging from the act of painting itself.
Wei’s practice turns inward, seeking imagery within psychological and perceptual experience rather than the external world. Beginning from an empty pictorial field, he allows forms to surface intuitively without determining their final appearance. Rejecting symbols and interpretative titles, he seeks to minimise the mediation of language and return painting to a more immediate visual state.
Wei has exhibited in China and France, including the solo exhibition 4479 at SIMULACRA Gallery, Beijing.
