MOUTH: SARAH FRIEND
MOUTH presents a new sculpture by Sarah Friend, woven from data-centre materials: internet cables, patch panels, aluminium and hundreds of zip ties. Working between contemporary art and software development, Friend transforms the hidden infrastructure of the digital world into a dense, bodily form. What once transmitted information is stripped of its function and reassembled into something that hovers between machine and organism. It could be read as a mouth, a skull, an insect, a nervous system, or a cluster of exposed organs. The cables become veins, muscles and intestines, while rows of white zip ties resemble teeth, hair or spines. The invisible anatomy of the digital world, the very material from which your AI companion is built, begins to feel strangely alive.
The sculpture belongs to an ongoing series in which each work grows from its own dimensions rather than from a predetermined image. The process is intuitive and entirely handmade. Every cable is bent, braided and woven by hand, drawing on techniques closer to textile making than industrial assembly. The work recalls basketry, rug weaving and folk craft as much as contemporary sculpture, revealing an unexpected continuity between ancient forms of making and the materials of the digital age.
This dialogue reaches further back into technological history. Long before the computer, the Jacquard loom translated woven patterns into programmable systems, becoming one of the earliest models of computation. The loom stood at the centre of political conflict as mechanisation threatened manual labour, a moment that resonates with today's anxieties surrounding artificial intelligence. Decades later, the Apollo Guidance Computer relied on hand-woven memory modules assembled by textile workers, reminding us that some of humanity's greatest technological achievements were literally woven by hand.
In an era increasingly shaped by invisible networks and artificial intelligence, MOUTH reminds us that every digital system ultimately depends on material, labour and the human hand. What appears technological reveals itself to be deeply organic.
